Sonnie Trotter

Athlete Bio

Name:  Sonnie Trotter

DOB: Nov 15th

How did you get started climbing?   I was first in gymnastics as a young lad, ten quit to try other things.  I found snowboarding and mountain biking which led me into trying rock climbing.  I was hooked right away as it had all the essential elements I was looking for, physical, mental, spiritual.

How old were you when you started?  I was 15 the first time I put on a harness and 16 when I took it up regularly.

Who or what inspired you to start climbing?  Chris Sharma had a impression on me for sure.  He was doing unthinkable things at such a young age.  I was much older than him when I started, but I had similar dreams.  Peter Croft made me stop in my tracks, I’ve never seen anyone look so solid on stone before.  I wanted to feel that too.

What was your first outdoor climb?  I tried a climb called, “when I put on my helmet I become like super man”  5.11c at Metcalf rock in Ontario.  I got WORKED.

What do you do when you’re not climbing?  I love skiing and snowboarding, riding bikes, hiking, wood craft, cooking with my girlfriend, surfing and soccer.  I also enjoy reading and writing and making short films.  Good stuff.

Any training advice or suggestions?  Fingers, fingers, fingers.  Protect them, but keep them strong.  Also, don’t be afraid to take time off to recover.  Climbing can be forever, and you can keep improving as long as you don’t get injured and lose motivation.  One step at a time, enjoy the ride.

What do you feel is your best accomplishment, outside of climbing?  Tricking my girlfriend into falling in love with me.  By far.  She’s sooooo rad.

What do you feel is your best accomplishment within climbing?  Staying alive for 15 years and climbing as many world class routes as I’ve managed to do.  I will never look back at my climbing life and say, wow, there was that ONE thing I did,  it will always be a collection of the things I did, the places I’ve been, the friends I made.

Favorite quote?  Too many to list.  Right now it’s Edward Abbey, he’s hilarious, “Society is like a stew. If you don’t stir it up every once in a while then a layer of scum floats to the top.”

If you could have 1 superpower what would it be?   The ability to heal.

If you could have 3 wishes, what would they be? (no wishing for more wishes)

My three wishes are lame.  A long healthy life, a long healthy marriage, and a motorcycle.

What was your favorite childhood cartoon?   The Smurfs were pretty crazy creatures, but Wolverine was my comic book collection hero and Superman, was well, he was superman.

Shameless self-promotion – my website.  www.sonnietrotter.com and I can be found on facebook sometimes as well.
