The Inaugural Rescue From Trees Program Training Recap

Last month, we supported the first Rescue from Trees program, hosted by the Summit Township Fire Department in Jackson, Michigan. Sixteen firefighters, representing both career and volunteer departments participated in the three-day program.

The first Rescue from Trees program, hosted by the Summit Township FD on June 16-18 in Jackson Michigan, was a great success.  Sixteen firefighters, representing both career and volunteer departments participated in the three-day program. The first module, led by a Certified Arborist, discussed Tree Biology and how to perform a Risk Assessment.

From there, half the class went on to discuss the Rigging Forces in trees, leading to an activity on Gaining Access, using Throw Lines and methods for Anchoring.  The other half received an orientation to Arborist Gear and Climbing Systems, as practiced Ascending and Work Positioning in the trees.

Day two started with a comprehensive presentation on Chainsaw safety, supported by Stihl Equipment.  This was followed by a short overview of the various Rescue Systems, broken down into three classifications:  Non-Entry, Canopy-Based and Ground-Based.  The rest of day was spent in hands-on workshops.

The final day began with an open discussion on Team Logistics and considerations for Stabilization of items like large branches.   This was followed by a final round of hands-on workshops.  The course concluded with the participants working in small groups to resolve a variety of scenarios.
